Each year, our social media landscape is taken over by hashtags signifying “world days”, intended to unite people, celebrate causes and raise awareness of pressing issues, inspiring change for the better. 

Today marks one of the most important world days in our calendar, Earth Day.  

Known as one of the largest environmental movements in history, since its launch in 1970, Earth Day has engaged some 1 billion people to campaign for a greener tomorrow.  The movement sets out to strengthen global environmental protection by raising awareness of climate change. 

The eminent issue of climate change has been grabbing headlines for over 30 years. But it wasn’t until the pandemic hit and the world came to a standstill that we were forced to interact with our surroundings in entirely new ways.  

With the lack of cars on the roads and planes in the skies, the air we breathed felt a little cleaner, and the stars at night shone a little brighter. Lockdown rules have no doubt heightened our appreciation of the world around us and demonstrated that collectively, we can implement change in the way we go about our daily lives. 

But with lockdown a distant memory, how can we keep up the momentum of green change?  

It’s days like today that can help us embrace change and keep the green momentum going. That’s why the theme for this year’s Earth Day celebration focuses on the need to “Invest In Our Planet”. 

We already know that greenhouse gases are the main driver of climate change and that we need to reach net-zero emissions by 2050 to keep the rise in global temperature below 1,5°C.
