It’s no secret that the UK is being hit by a “cost of living” crisis. The ‘cost of living crisis’ refers to the fall in ‘real’ incomes that the UK has experienced since late 2021, caused by a combination of high inflation outstripping wage increases and tax increases which have squeezed incomes for millions of households.
Although this affects all of us, it is the most vulnerable in our society who are being forced to choose between heating and eating in a desperate attempt to stay afloat.
From food, through to petrol and energy bills, the soaring prices of commodities coupled with tax hikes, rent spikes, and rising inflation rates (reaching a 30-year-high of 6.2% in March 2022) are playing an enormous part in shaping the standard of living as we know it.
According to a report by The Office for National Statistics, the number of adults affected by the rising costs of living rose from 62% in November 2021, to 83% in March this year. The study also uncovered that a massive 53% of individuals who rent their home were unable to cover any unexpected expenses.
Aside from trying to keep up with soaring shop prices and monthly bills, many households are already facing a truly unimaginable yet realistic prospect, a prospect of losing their home.
At IMPACT, we believe that everyone should have an equal right to a safe and warm home, an equal right to a standard of living that supports their health and well-being.
Our long-term ambition is to address the housing crisis and make fuel poverty a thing of the past. We know that this journey of positive change isn’t going to happen overnight. So, while we work to deliver the sustainable homes of the future through Impact Modular and our placemaking arms Impact Smart homes and Impact Developments, we are committed to contributing to our society TODAY.
Earlier this year, we set out on a challenge to raise money for Shelter through our “Run with Impact” challenge (read more here). Our challenge is still very much ongoing, and more relevant today than ever before.
Shelter’s recent extensive polling, carried out by YouGov in November-December 2021, found that 1 in 17 private renters had received a notice of eviction in the previous month or were behind on their rent. What’s even more concerning is that some 45% of private tenants expressed worries over becoming homeless due to rocketing living costs and the current economic situation.
Each year, Shelter aids millions of people struggling with bad housing, homelessness, and those facing eviction. Through their advice, support, and legal services, the charity defends everyone’s right to a safe home.
The team at IMPACT have set out to collectively run 1,500km and raise £1,500 for Shelter.
HOME IS EVERYTHING, so please donate to our cause HERE.
