Every action, however big or small, has an impact, shaping the future as we know it. This powerful cycle of cause and effect is the driving force behind our company ethos. We want to make a positive impact on the built and natural habitat, by addressing and tackling the Great Emergencies of Our Time: social cohesion, wellness, and the environment.
According to the United Nations, at least 800 species worldwide are affected by marine debris, and as much as 80% of that litter is plastic. Fish, sea birds, sea turtles, and marine mammals become entangled in or ingest plastic debris, causing suffocation, starvation, and drowning.
Humans are not immune to this threat either. While plastics are estimated to take hundreds of years to fully decompose (if ever), some break down much quicker into tiny particles, which in turn end up in the seafood that we eat.
To pursue our vision of a greener and more harmonious future, we have volunteered for the The Marine Conservation Society (MCS) to help gather invaluable data that will help implement new policies and changes in the way that we use Plastic. (The MCS is responsible for the 5p plastic bag charge, thanks to the data collected by volunteers!)
And so team members (and their families) from Impact Capital Group, Impact Lending and Impact Working joined forces for BEACH IMPACT DAY.
Our mission was to survey 100 meters of a beach stretch at Southend on Sea, by picking and recording the plastic litter that we found, ranging from large plastic items through to small nurdles. (Nurdles are tiny pieces of broken-down plastic). The team collected 25kg of litter thanks to their joint efforts. The data collected was submitted to the MCS so that it can be analysed and used in enforcing positive change.
The Marine Conservation Society fights for the future of our oceans through people-powered action, with science on its side. Working with communities, businesses and governments, its purpose is to protect marine habitats and species from the harmful effects of plastic pollution.
Klaudia Bacinska, our Director of Marketing and Brand said:
“In the grand scheme of things, a single beach clean-up makes little difference when considering that a full Garbage truck’s worth of plastic enters the ocean every minute. However, the concept of a “Beach Clean Up” has become a global movement. Organisations, communities and individuals, on a global scale, are all latching on to play their part.
By organising BEACH IMPACT DAY and gathering data for the MCS, we hope to play our part in making a change, and to inspire other like-minded organisations and individuals to act in saving our environment. Even the smallest of acts can have a profound impact on our future.”
